Getting Savage

Between January 27 and December 27 last year I worked out close to 200 days. From December 27 until I moved to San Diego on February 5 I worked out about 10 days. As I reflected in a blog post recapping my trip around the world in 2012, fitness was Read more

Are You Ready for This?

Today is February 20. I’m sitting in the studio. It’s a gloomy day. I moved here on February 5, just over six weeks after touchdown in the United States. I took down all the boxes from the rafters in my garage in Fresno, opened them up and went through everything I Read more

Looking Back

Sitting here at my desk in Fresno, CA, I’m staying still for a moment and taking a deep breath. It’s been quite the ride since touching down in Miami on December 16. After two days in Miami I spent four days at Sigma Nu Fraternity Headquarters in Lexington, Virginia, my Read more

Crossing the Finish Line

Bocas del Toro  I flew from from Lima to Panama City, Panama, landing at about 17:30, and walked around for about a half-hour with a sign reading “Share a Taxi to Albrook, / Compartir un Taxi a Albrook.” I didn’t find someone to share a taxi but did find a Read more

Adventures in Bolivia and Peru

...continued from Rounding the Corner, December 14. La Paz and el Camino de la Muerte  With the census day in Bolivia I’d had to plan things pretty tight to do both the salt flats and Death Road. That meant taking the overnight bus from Uyuni back to La Paz, scheduled to Read more

The story

To be honest, it’s not that crazy of a story. I love traveling. I’ve heard plenty of people talk about going around the world. One guy in particular told me he went around the world for a year and it was great. He suggested I do it. He’s a guy I trust, so I decided that’s what I was doing. That was in 2006 I believe. A couple years later I actually wrote it down on a piece of paper: “This is happening” Read more

Now Serving

A little while ago I decided to add a service element to my trip. There are really several reasons. First of all, this is not a one-year vacation. I’m not taking off to party my way around the world. This adventure…this journey…is not going to be be all fun and games. It’s going to take some hard work; it’s going to pose some serious challenges for me in many different ways. Frankly, I’m mildly terrified. Most importantly, I’m not going to be just floating along. Just like having a job, I’ve got things to do and take care of every day. I’ve got to have a routine. I’ve got a lot to learn. I need to learn about each country I plan to visit. What I want to see and do there. Who the people are. How they live. I need to know what I’m getting myself into. What better way to learn about where I’m going than doing some local service work? Maybe it’s the Red Cross in one country, a local outfit in the next. Somewhere I can dig in and get my hands a little dirty. Bring a little something to the table. Read more

Connection

I’ve subscribed to this prayer: “God, please bring me today on my path the people that can help me in my journey, and bring those that I can help along theirs.” One core element of this adventure is connecting with people around the world. If you know someone in an area that I’m visiting, and you think they would like to connect with me, please let me know.

As I reflected in a blog post recapping my trip around the world in 2012, fitness was probably my most significant accomplishment over the year. Not long after stepping foot on California soil, though, I took a planned break. Just…taking it easy.  Read more
